Abbey introduces Rip Squeak, Jesse and Euripides to the most wonderful place — "The Toy Room," which is often the setting for many scenes in the Rip Squeak stories. This image is from the first children's book, Rip Squeak and His Friends. It also appears in the coffee-table book, The Roaring Adventures of Rip Squeak and in the board book, A Good Day for Abbey.
This painting set the stage for all the Toy Room paintings. You can see many of the toys that made it into other paintings, along with the quilt on the child’s bed, the yellow walls, the rug on the floor, the blue window seat, and the window itself. It is painted from the perspective of the characters, which brings the viewer into the piece, making us feel as small as the characters.
