The word giclée (pronounced: zhee-clay) comes from the French and means “to spray” or “to spurt”. Giclée printing is a form of reproduction that is created by scanning an image into a computer and printing it with finely sprayed (over a million droplets per second) pigmented inks on either canvas or paper. The artist works very closely with the printer until the most accurate reproduction of the original is achieved. It may take the printing of 50 to 100 proofs in order to create a print that meets both the artist’s and the printer’s high standards. The pigmented inks used to print our giclées will last between 80 and 100 years without fading, according to Wilhelm Institute testing. Special U.V. inhibitors, which are sprayed on the face of every one of our prints, give added protection, increasing light fastness and longevity of the images. Thus, we believe that the quality of the giclée prints in the Rip Squeak series is top of the line, each piece personally inspected, hand signed, and numbered by the artist.
What the difference between the limited edition giclées and open edition prints ?
Limited edition giclées are high quality prints that have been proofed, hand signed, and numbered by the artist who created the original painting. They undergo a thorough screening process where they are compared to the original painting to ensure the highest quality reproduction. The size of the edition varies based on when the prints were published. Rip Squeak limited edition giclées printed between 1997 and early 2001 had 195 plus 15 Artist Proofs in the edition. From late 2001 to 2004 the edition size went up to 395 plus 45 Artist Proofs, and after 2004 the edition size went up to 595 plus 45 Artist Proofs to accommodate the growing demand for Rip Squeak artwork. Once a limited edition sells out completely, however, they are only available on the secondary market.
Open-edition prints are also giclées, but they are not hand signed or numbered by the artist. Therefore, there is no limit on how many are printed. Open-edition prints are always smaller in size than their limited-edition counterparts. This helps preserve the value of the limited-edition pieces while keeping the image available to fans of the artwork.
AP – Artist Proof. With each limited edition run, we release a small number of Artist Proofs. These originally were the prints actually printed by the artist, however with the giclee and other modern printing techniques the artist does not print the proofs anymore. These prints are now for the artist’s personal use or are being sold if the artist makes them available to the publisher.
WP- Working Proof. Working proofs are made while the artist and the printer are working on the perfect reproduction of the original painting. There are usually two to five working proofs created with each edition, and they are not sold until the entire edition is sold out. Each working proof will be ever-so-slightly different from the others (with a different filter, contrast, color-balance for example) so they are very special prints.
Are these characters from a movie?
No, the Rip Squeak characters were born from the imagination of artist and creator, Leonard Filgate and his wife, and author, Susan Yost-Filgate. Their adventures fill the pages of a series of children’s books: Rip Squeak and His Friends, The Treasure, and The Adventure. More books are in the works along with more beautiful artwork that bring the stories to life. A movie or TV could be in the future of Rip Squeak.
Leonard Filgate and his wife Susan Yost-Filgate created Rip Squeak in 1997. What began as series of paintings based around a loose storyline has grown into a whole series of children’s books and collectible artwork.
In 2006, Leonard Filgate retired from Rip Squeak to pursue other artistic projects, but he has entrusted his beloved characters into the hands of some very accomplished painters. Julia Harnett Harvey, Chris Hopkins, Anthony LoSchiavo, and Jim Kosvanec will continue to create beautiful illustrations for future books based on the characters created by the Filgates.
Leonard wanted to try something new, and to explore fresh avenues with his art. He also has some new and exciting things going on. (
